Case study

Kernow Learning

A row of EV chargers along the edge of a school car park
A twin-socket EV charger between two staff parking bays
EV chargers lining the staff car park, looking towards the playing fields

A charger set back against the hedge, serving bays on both sides

Kernow Learning asked us to work out how EV charging could work across its schools: charging for trust staff during the week, with the option of opening it to the local community at weekends and in the holidays. We assessed each school and set out the steps, costs and timelines, so the trust could decide with the full picture.

  • Each school's electrical capacity, location and internet connection assessed
  • Staff charging on weekdays, with community access at weekends and in the holidays
  • An app for monitoring energy use, and a maintenance plan to keep every unit working
  • Clear steps, costs and timelines for every site

“Their insights were invaluable in helping us make informed decisions regarding potential investments in EV charging infrastructure.”

The numbers

What your trust could unlock

Each school has its own government funding allowance, so the total grows with every school you add.

up to £48,000

for 24 sockets across 4 schools

A share of every charge, paid monthly

The grant pays up to £2,000 a socket for state-funded schools, and the rest of the capital cost is covered. Each school's survey confirms how many sockets it can take.

How a rollout works

From the first school to the whole trust

  1. 1

    Pick your first schools

Send photos of the car park and fuse board for each school. We'll say which sites are easiest to start with.

  2. 2

    Site survey

We survey each school to plan where the chargers go and how many each site can take.

  3. 3

    Funding arranged

We obtain the government grant for each school and the rest of the capital cost is covered. Nothing to pay up front.

  4. 4

    Installed

Qualified electricians fit the chargers at each school, working around the school day.

  5. 5

    Monthly payouts

Staff and visitors pay by app, and each school gets a monthly payout for its share of every session.

Questions trusts ask

Is it really zero cost to the school?

Yes. The capital costs are fully covered and there are no monthly fees. We'll take you through the agreement before anything is signed.

Who can charge?

Staff and visitors, and you can open the chargers to parents or the public too. If they're open to the public, they must meet the Public Chargepoint Regulations, which we handle.

Does the trust apply for the grant, or each school?

The government grant is per school, so each school has its own allowance of up to 40 sockets. We handle the applications. Each school just needs its URN and two contacts on school email addresses: one at the trust and one at the school.

How long do we have?

The government grant for state-funded schools closes on 31 March 2027, and installs get busy in spring. It's worth starting the first schools this term.
