EV charging for schools and colleges

State-funded schools and education institutions have their own scheme worth up to £2,000 per socket, four times the standard grant. Academy trusts can apply for up to 40 sockets per school. Independent schools use the standard £500 Workplace scheme instead.

Workplace Charging Scheme for state-funded education · closes 31 March 2027

Step 1

Do you qualify for the grant?

A few yes/no questions, based on the official gov.uk rules.

Who can use the chargers

Anyone: staff, visitors, parents or the public. If you open chargers to the public, they must meet the Public Chargepoint Regulations, which we handle.

What you'll need to apply

  • Your URN or establishment reference number (from Get Information about Schools)
  • Staff and pupil numbers
  • Two contacts with school email addresses (for a trust, one at the trust and one at the school)

Question 1 of 5

Is the school or college state-funded (maintained, academy or trust)?

Independent schools can still get £500 a socket through the standard Workplace scheme.

Step 2

What could it earn you?

Change the numbers to match your site. Watch the grant grow as you add sockets.

  • Up to £2,000 a socketThe most generous chargepoint grant there is, and it closes on 31 March 2027.
  • Staff benefit, no cost to the budgetStaff pay for what they use at a fair tariff, so it doesn't come out of the school's electricity budget.
  • Income in the evenings and holidaysOpen bays to parents, clubs or the public when the car park is empty.

More sockets, more grant: every extra socket adds up to £2,000 of grant, up to 40 sockets.

Staff cars sit in school car parks all day, which is ideal for charging. The grant can cover 75% of the cost, up to £2,000 a socket. These are your numbers, not a promise. Margin is what drivers pay above your electricity cost. The app's admin fee is paid by drivers, so you have no monthly fees.

Step 3

How it works with Manta

  1. 1

    Send us photos

WhatsApp a few photos or a short video of your parking and fuse board. We'll tell you what's possible.

  2. 2

    Survey and fixed price

The grant needs an installer survey before you apply. You get a fixed price, never a surprise after.

  3. 3

    You apply, we guide you

The application is in your name. We tell you what goes in each box. The voucher usually arrives within 5 working days.

  4. 4

    Fitted, grant off the bill

You pass us the voucher, a qualified electrician fits the chargers, and the grant comes off your invoice.

  5. 5

    Drivers pay, you earn

We set up app payments with Tap Electric. You choose the price per kWh and the money goes to your bank.
